The Little Sailboat

Picture
The little sail boat set sail on the open water. The sun had not completely come up to greet her. The sun draped a tinge of orange across the sky, as it peeped over the hills in the distance. The morning star appeared to offer the little sail boat a sleepy good morning.

How miraculous was this fiery ball of energy who had come beyond the orbits of Neptune and Pluto to offer her a early greeting, she thought to herself.

Her sails whipped about with short, snappy gestures, as she made her way through the water. There was just enough wind to carry her across the ocean blue. She hoped that she would miss the storm that was forecast the night before. While there appeared to be no dark clouds in the morning sky, she knew the challenges that the water might bring.

Confidence was her name. While her name offered a strong connotation, deep within her structure, she had always felt less than confident. She was proud that her name was hand painted so beautifully across her starboard side. All who would encounter her on the water would know her by name and perhaps the frailty of her inner being would be hidden for other water crafts to see. The little sail boat always believed in self-preservation and preparation, although she had not always felt these emotions.

I will make this my anthem of choice, despite my weaknesses, she declared to the open sea.

It was not long before Confidence began to acknowledge  many different boats upon the water. The old cargo boats caused her most concern. Their intimidating stares seemed to penetrate her small frame. They would pass her ever so slowly, which caused a violent ripple in the water. This caused Confidence to feel frightened. They were not the friendly type so she believed.

She did not dare look upon their large frames for fear they would run her over. Perhaps they would cause her to sink and she would never be seen again. These monstrous vessels had much more experience and she felt she was like a tiny, insignificant urchin in a big sea.

Despite her fear, Confidence kept her eyes focused ahead. If she did not make too much of a production, they would not notice her and she could pass by them in peace.
Picture
She could not help but feel slightly uncomfortable as she sailed past the older vessels. Confidence knew she had a leisurely existence and had not found her life to be with much purpose, other than sailing on the water. Confidence knew that her looks could only get her so far. How she longed for purpose in the vast ocean of blue.

By now the sun had made its way to the center of the sky and was shining down upon her with a vengeance. The bright star was almost too much for her to take in.

All of a sudden Confidence realized the wind had exited the ocean and it was no longer present to guide her home. She never dreamed the wind would abandon her sails. She looked around in panic and saw nothing for miles except for open water that lay dormant, dead like, and non-moving. She felt abandoned by the one thing that she depended on.

The water was not helpful and seemed to offer an unsettling calm. It felt like an unnerving blanket of nothingness surrounding her. Confidence sat a long time, just floating upon the open water.

Every once in a while she would witness a large fish jump from the oceans depth as if to let her know she was not alone.

Confidence laughed nervously out loud and screamed out to the sea.

"My name is written so beautifully on the starboard side, but it will certainly start to fade in time and I will be lost forever.

Suddenly a loud alarm sounded in the distance. It penetrated through the solemn air, causing Confidence to tremble. Confidence looked up to see a large cargo ship coming her way. It was one of the largest ships she had ever encountered. If she could only turn slightly, perhaps the waves would give her the needed boost to send her in the right direction.

"Wind and Waves, please touch my sails so that I may go home."

It was if heaven heard her cry and answered her prayer. A gentle wind touched her sails and the gentle waves surrounded her. Confidence was able to turn around just as the large cargo ship passed by.

This time however... Confidence did not put her face down. She lifted her sails in a happy stance and before she could offer a thank you, she was on her way home.

What a beautiful story of courage, Kimmie! This reminds me of The Little Engine That Could.

We're all met with uncertainty, trials, and insecurity throughout our lives. Belief in ourselves, in God, and those who are willing to lend a helping hand, helps set our sails in the right direction where we can hold our heads high and know that all is well.

I love the message in this story, Kimmie. This has the makings of a wonderful bedtime story.

I always find so much meaning regarding the human condition in your short stories. This is no exception. I agree with Shauna this would make a great children's book.

Dear Kimmie,

I can add nothing more to the comments about the quality of this story and what a sweet children's book it would make.

I must add that it is heartwarming to see you back writing - where you clearly belong.

You selected the perfect song to go with this treasure. Love and hugs, mar
