The bottle tree was a project made out of love from many hands. Dad had started collecting bottles many months ago. He carefully placed each bottle on his back porch and before long, he had collected many beautiful glass bottles.
Dad enlisted my husband to pick up the wood with strict instructions on the diameters and the kind of wood he wanted. He then asked his nephew to be the man to cement the wood into the ground and make the holes for the dowel rods. My brother attached the rods and placed the cap on top.
My Dad then started the job of priming the wood. He would reach as far as he could, standing for only a minute, but to only fall back into his wheel chair. Since dad is disabled, he could only reach so far, but to our surprise he reached very far. The remainder of the bottle tree had only a few inches left to the top from being primed completely. My brother then stepped in and finished the priming.
The next phase was the final application of paint! Once again Dad did the best he could, but as with the priming, there was still a few inches where he could not reach. When his neighbor happen to peek over the fence, he saw my Dad trying so hard to paint this wood. He gladly offered his assistance and painted the last bit of the bottle tree.
Today on Father's Day, as we were visiting my Dad, we looked out to see the finished product.
Of course there was on thing missing...The colorful bottles!
"Dad lets go put the bottles on the tree!" I said.
"Oh I don't know...its pretty hot out there!" Dad replied.
"We can do it! You can tell us where they go!" I insisted.
So with Dad being the great instructor, my husband and I placed the bottles on the tree as Dad saw fit.
I knew there had to be a moral to this story somewhere, or perhaps just a feel good story to share on this special Father's day.
As with many lessons my Father has taught me through the years, this bottle tree cried out with one I will never forget. The making of this bottle tree illuminated the act of giving by many hands to accomplish one purpose!
Surely...this was a picture of the best side of life and human nature in action!
When the world steps in to help one another; something beautiful happens!
