Aging Gracefully: Massaging Pain Away

Massaging pain away is sometimes the last thing we think about when we are in discomfort. We may run to the medicine cabinet to take some over counter or prescribed medication in hopes our pain will be relieved quickly.
I just had to wonder...what if there was a better way?

Recently I have been incorporating a mechanical massage apparatus when I am in pain. Not only did it help with the pain, but I actually felt lighter and my legs not as stiff or heavy.

A couple of things were also clearly in my favor right away by using the machine verses taking medication. I did not have to worry about my stomach hurting. My stomach has never tolerated anti-inflammatory medications such as Ibuprofen. I have always had to weigh the benefits of the pain being gone to obtaining an upset stomach. Neither is pleasant to deal with.

Being that I am not one to take any daily medication except for a couple vitamins, I am like a little kid when I need to take something. I do detest pain medicines as I have had violent reactions in the past.

Massage therapy has been used to reduce pain and promote recovery of injured muscles for many years so this only makes sense to me. If you are like me, I cannot afford a massage therapist every day and I am sure they would never massage long enough to my liking.

While trying to do some research on this subject, I was shocked to see no long term studies on the effects of massage therapy, however this does not mean it has not been done. I think most people are looking for more natural methods verses contributing to the pharmaceutical companies. That is another blog for sure!

Perhaps massaging pain away is something that can be done as the first line of defense verses the last.

Until next time!
Happy Good Friday!
May the Lord Bless and Keep You Always.

Dear Kim,

A massage is heaven to me when I'm in pain...nothing like it, the best relief.

Funny I just learned Big Bad John was the #1 song on the day I was born in 1961...LOL

Happy, peaceful Easter to you and yours. Love, Maria

Hello Kimmie. You are correct to search out alternatives to taking a 'pill' for every ailment. Enlist your husband. One hour of shipping duty for one hour of massage therapy.

Kimmie,

I don't know much about massage or pills, but whatever works for you is great. Interesting to read your information on this.
Hugs, and happy Easter to you and yours.

There is nothing better than a proper massage. Unfortunately I cannot afford a professional masseur, or physio therapist, and although the people in my life will surely massage my pain away, asking them is another story. I have to get over my own stubborn pride and admit that I am in pain. Then comes the next obstacle - the feeling of guilt because they are spending their precious time on me, and oh, if they don't do it right, I have to bite my tongue and end the session without giving them the idea that their kind effort to relieve my pain was in vain.

On the other hand, putting myself in their shoes - in the shoes of the one who is doing another a most-needed favor, I should chuck my pride and train them. I mean, how happy will I be knowing that I have spent fifteen minutes or what relieving someone's pain?

Mmmm, now you have me thinking, Kimmie!

BTW, the prolotherapist suggested a foam roller - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DOcdcAkVmck

Hi Martie you have touched on my delemah too...if only our loved ones would be willing to be trained and massage until we say stop and for me that may mean NEVER hahaha...I do hope you will give it a try...I have to say after my second session today...I am still pain free and moving much better. I know that pain meds are a must for some and I do not think we should suffer either. I wish they did not hurt my stomach so much or me being so sensitive. I do feel this is a great alternative.
Thank you so much for coming by
Lots of love

Kim - this is so relaxing! I give myself mini massages when I lie down at night and when I awaken in the morning. A very dear friend of mine is both a minister and a massage therapist, so I'm going to forward this to him. He'll enjoy it, I'm sure.
