“The greatest fine art of the future will be the making of a comfortable living from a small piece of land.”

Good morning friends,
Roy and I hope you are doing well and had a wonderful week. Today we wanted to show you our little garden, explain what we planted, and the type of vegetables we chose to grow.
Since moving to South Texas, from Central Texas, I knew something was missing. Sure enough it was gardening. In Central Texas we had a beautiful large garden and six chickens. We had turned a one acre plot of land into a small backyard farm. It was hard to give up when we moved into town. Gardening had a way of keeping my mind busy and I found I had little time to dwell on sad or negative circumstances.
Gardening to me has always been my happy place.
For the last two years, I felt as if something was missing. I went to Roy and explained that I wanted to plant a small garden. He responded kindly, “whatever makes you happy.”
He is a keeper!
Of course when I said I wanted to do a small garden, he knew instinctively that he would be enlisted in the garden project. After 27 years of marriage it goes without saying.
I knew I did not want to be on my knees, as this would be very hard for me. Because of a medical condition, I would not able to get up and down like I used too. That is why we chose the raised beds.
We obtained four horse watering buckets from a flea market and I was so excited to find them. We drilled holes in the bottom for drainage and filled each one half way with branches, logs, and leaves so that we would not have to fill the bins completely full. We used garden soil purchased from Home Depot along with a touch of organic peat moss. We used a couple "Sterlite" brand bins as well. I read where they are not toxic to the vegetables due to how they are made.
Deciding what to plant was quite easy for us, as we chose vegetables that we liked to eat. We planted many varieties of vegetables and companion herbs to help with insects. I truly had to look up the different companion herbs to go with the veggies, as I had never planted herbs with the vegetables before.
I am looking forward to watching nature do its thing.
We planted many herbs to include, Garlic, Dill, Basil, Lemon Balm, Mexican Tarragon, Onion Chives, Oregano, and some Marigolds. We planted a Chocolate mint, which will be interesting.
The vegetables included many varieties such as Cherry and Roma Tomatoes, Corn, Bush Beans, Cucumbers, Blue Potatoes, Japanese Eggplant, Strawberries, Zucchini, Spaghetti Squash, and Black Watermelon. We added Cantaloupe and Asparagus to the mix. We knew that the Asparagus would take up to two years, but no time like the present to get started. We also have added some leafy greens and Cilantro.
The highlight to this message in writing this post and sharing our video is that anyone can grow their food in small spaces. It is a great way to get fresh vegetables. I love the idea of sharing our abundance with friends, family, and even strangers.
We pray as the Texas heat comes upon us, the good Lord will give us wisdom in caring for these plants so they may flourish and grow. We know so little but we have the will and determination to try. By trial and error we will learn...such is life.
