Good morning my friends! Its Roy and Kim from South Texas. I wish I could say it is a warm and sunny day, but today it is cold and gray! I had to go cover up my little seedlings. Poor things... I hope they will be okay. We are not going to fret or let it effect our day!
"This is the day that the Lord has made and we will rejoice and be glad in it!"
Today we will be talking about composting, reviewing our new composter, and adding some good thoughts on why composting is so important!

What is Composting Anyway?
Composting is a process where plants and other raw, natural, material decompose. All sorts of bacteria work to break it down.
The compost then takes on a different shape, a soil like substance that can be used for growing food or any type of plants.
We make sure the compost has the right materials provided so that it will break down properly. We recently cut down an old tree that was in the middle of our garden space. I truly did not want to cut it down, but it took up so much room and I needed the space for my garden. It also blocked the sun from some of the garden beds.
We set the little tree aside to use in our beds as fillers then the compost will be placed on top. The sacrifice of this little tree will not be forgotten nor lose its value. It will live on in our garden by working hard as compost material.
Compost adds so many valuable nutrients and in the long run it will save money verses having to buy fertilizers and pesticides.

Before I get into the review, I would like to explain the three types of compost that may help to understand the process of composting.
Greens: This is all food scrapes such as vegetable peels, old bread, tea bags, coffee grounds and even manure of animals such as rabbits and chickens.
Browns: These include fallen leaves, dry weeds, shredded paper, wood chips and straw.
Oxygen: This is needed to improve the composting process. The idea is to layer the material.
This not only helps to keep out unwanted pests, but it also turns the waste into compost by using microorganisms.
Air is needed to make the process work. Turning the compost will speed up the breakdown. It will also prevent your compost from becoming stinky and slimy.

Roy's Review
I picked the Yimby FCMP Outdoor IM4000 Dual Chamber Tumbling Composter because it had the best reviews for the price on Amazon. The price at the time of purchase was $99.00. It was shipped out speedily and arrived to our house in no time. The composter itself is not very heavy and easy to move. (Perhaps in the future I will add wheels. )
The tools called for in the instructions were a standard flat screw driver and a crescent wrench. I chose to use a 3/8's socket wrench to hold the nuts better and a square drive bit. There is a slot for the square drive on the bolt head.

The assembly is not hard but slightly tedious and time consuming. The frame had 8 bolts and nuts and the bin itself had 56 bolts and nuts. If two people tackled the job it surely would have taken less than an hour to assemble.
Note: When constructing the compost bin portion, the slide panel has to be put on first, or the other pieces will not fit correctly.
The frame is made out of steel legs and the bin itself is made of heavy plastic. The compost bin is dual sided. This is good because you can fill up one side with your green and brown matter. After a few weeks, you can fill up the other side while the first side is composting. The composter should be rotated every day or two which is an easy task. This allows the compost to have fresh air mixed in which makes the compost degrade faster.
The assembly instructions were poorly written in my opinion and not step by step. (I only used a couple of curse words in the assembly process.) Fortunately there were some pictures which made the assembly a little easier. I did learn after about 10 minutes of frustration that if the "slide" panel is not assembled first, then the rest of the panels (labeled B) would not fit properly. This may be a bit of a challenge for anyone who doesn't assemble products much.
Overall the compost itself appears stable and well made (after it was finally assembled). I would give it an "A". The assembly and instructions I would only give a "C". In the product reviews of the composter I noticed that many people enjoyed the Yimby FCMP Outdoor IM4000 Dual Chamber Tumbling Composter. The reviewers were also correct about assembly time. It took me about one hour to complete assembly.

A society grows great when old men plant trees whose shade they know they shall never sit in.— Greek proverb
As I age, I think about the past and when I was young. I wish I had a small fraction of the wisdom I feel I am gaining now. I applaud the younger generation who are fighting to save and protect our earth by embracing the more simpler life. I have promised myself that in the second half of my life, I will enjoy the world around me by doing what I can, and never discount the smallest of deeds.
